Recommended Dosage for Fish Oil & Omega-3 Supplements

Here, find out what is the recommended dosage for fish oil for you. The amount of Omega-3 supplements you should take completely depends on the reason you're taking it. Also, there are some instances in which you should avoid taking fish oil, even though it's usually healthy for you. The American Heart Association lists the following recommended dosages for fish oil pills:

1. Heart patients (people with recent heart surgery or documented heart disease) need about one gram daily. It's best to get DHA from foods, but if it's hard to meet this requirement from diet alone, ask your doctor about taking fish oil supplements instead.

2. People with high blood fats (triglycerides) need two to four times as much as people with known heart disease.

3. Others should ask their doctor to recommend the right fish oil dose for them.

Keep in mind that there can be too much of a good thing. Taking too high of a dose of fish oil can cause blood clotting problems. This is why it's best not to guess how much to take. See a registered dietitian and your physician for the exact dosage you should take.
